While Sockeye salmon are one of the smaller species of Pacific salmon, they are the most desired by Alaskans. Growing between 18 to 31 inches in length and weighing 6-12 pounds on average, and a fun and animated salmon to catch. The yearly average during mid-July of Reds swimming into the Kenai ranges from 900,000 to 1.5 million, can last for several weeks, and the Kasilof ranges from 250,000 to 500,000 from mid-June to mid-July. In 2006 over 2 million Kenai Reds entered the river within a few weeks. The daily bag limit for Sockeye Salmon now stands at 3 or 6 except for the Russian River where the daily limit at this time is three.
On both the Kenai and Kasilof River we’ll shore-up and fish each area for minutes to hours, which varies depending on the tide and fish activity. If you’re new to the whole experience and need a little help with your technique, we’ll take the time to show you!
